HLG announced as major sponsor of Australia’s first Islamic Museum

The Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG) has been announced as the principal sponsor of Australia’s first Islamic Museum, the Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA), which is expected to be a cultural hub for Islamic art and education in Australia.

The Museum, a non-for-profit organisation to be located in the city of Melbourne, Australia, was founded to showcase the talent of Muslim artists and educate the wider Australian community about the rich cultural heritage of Muslims in Australia and Muslim societies abroad.

“The Islamic Museum of Australia recognises the positive contributions Muslims have made to Australia, and we have received overwhelming support from the international community to see our project vision become a reality,” said the Museum’s founder, Mr Moustafa Fahour.

Scheduled to open in 2014, the Islamic Museum of Australia will feature stories, interactive displays and art exhibits.  The Museum is being built by Leighton Contractors, which is part of HLG’s largest shareholder, the Leighton Group.

“HLG was established in 2007 when the Leighton Group merged its Middle East operations with Al Habtoor Engineering, one of the leading contractors in the region.

“This merger represents how companies and individuals from different countries, cultures and religions, can work well together,” said HLG CEO and Managing Director, Mr José Antonio López-Monís.

HLG announced the sponsorship recently in Melbourne at the IMA gala dinner, which was attended by Government delegates – including the UAE Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Ali Nasser Al Nuaimi and the Australian Federal Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Senator The Hon. Kate Lundy – and senior international business representatives from around the world.

“As one of the leading international contractors in the Middle East, with strong ties to Australia, we see the benefits to be gained when we work together in a way that is built on respect and understanding.

“We wish the Islamic Museum of Australia every success in achieving their vision of cultural harmony, through arts and education, and are honored to contribute to the success of this important cultural initiative,” Mr López-Monís concluded.
